-The Little Rock Nine
In 1957, efforts to integrate the once all-white Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas were met with resistance and violence. Nine black students are blocked from entering the school on the orders of Governor Orval Faubus. On Sept. 24, President Eisenhower sends federal troops and the National Guard to protect the nine African American students at the high school from white mobs trying to block the school's integration. These nine students became known as the "Little Rock Nine". The desegregation of students there helped people understand human rights a little better as it became one of the one of the most important events in the African-American civil rights movement and also aided in the passing of the civil rights act.
